SHIELD I Filed Sept. 16, 1941 Gerirude 5' iova ll GXAMM Patented Aug. 24, 1943 UNITED STA ES 3 orries i.
. SHIELD. Gertrude Stovall, Los Angel-agents Application i ma... 16,1Q41,.Sei'iall lo.411,040 .I j"
1 mm. (or-2917i) This invention relates to a shield and more particularly pertains to a shield which is especially applicable for use in protecting the -face of a person while subjecting the headand hair to the action of heated air delivered from a drier as in beauty parlor operations.
An object of the invention is to provide a shield which is shaped and adapted to be applied to the head of a person in a fashion to substantially encircle the scalp and project outwardly therefrom so as to deflect the portions of the stream of heated airdirected toward the scalp from a the end portions thereof into mverlying relation to each other whichaction asabove stated cone drier which ordinarily fiow over the face and neck of the person being treated, and yet expose the main portion of the hair to the action of the drier.
Another object is to provide a shield of the above character which is so constructed that a' shield of predetermined size may be readily fitted to heads of various sizes whereby a single sized shield may be generally used.
A further object is to provide a shield of annular formation which is adapted to be contracted to eflect reduction of its inner periphery.
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention is carried into effect as illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of the shield showing it in its normal form and depicting one embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shield shown in Fig. 1 showing it in its assembled position;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view depicting the mode of applying the shield;
Fig. 4 is a plan View of a modified form of the shield;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the shield shown in Fig. 4 showing it as assembled.
Referring to the drawing more specifically,; A indicates generally the blank of the shield which is formed of thin sheet flexible materials such as paper and is annular in form, but which is provided with a radially extendingv gap 6 affording normally spaced opposed end marginal portions I and 8 adapted to be brought into overlying relation to each other. The blank A is normally flat but on the end portions 1 and 8 thereof being brought into an overlapped position will assume a frusto-conical shape. A narrow upstanding flange 9 is formed on the inner perimeter of the blank to reinforce and stiffen its inner margin. The split annulus thus formed is contractible circumierentially and diametrically by drawing vertsathe normally flat lank into" anahnli iis of frusto-conical formation =as-show .in Figs. .2 and 5, the inner and out W conferences and d ame e s o which a ulus w ll ary according to the extent of overlap of the end margins I and 8.
edge of the tongue is formed with a V-notch I2 one side of which extends in continuation of the end edge of the marginal portion 8 and which notch is adapted to be disposed astride the portion of the blank forming the inner end of a slot in a fashion to effect locking engagement therewith. The inner ends of the slots II are correspondingly spaced inwardly from the inner margin of the blank a distance equal to the distance between the inner margin of the blank and inner end of the V-notch I2 so that when the overlapped ends of the blank are interconnected the overlying peripheral portions thereof will be i in register or substantially so. I
The outer end portions of the slots II are curved away from the end margin 8 as indicated at l3 to provide along the inner margin of the slot a lip M which is adapted to be elevated slightly and thereby facilitate insertion of the tongue Ii] into the slot.
A modified form of the fastening means for the overlapped end portion of the blank is shown in Fig. 5 which comprises a spring wire clip I5 adapted to be positioned astride the overlapped end portions as illustrated so as to grip the end portions in the fashion common to such clips.
The annulus thus formed is adapted to be applied to the head of a person to encircle the scalp as shown in Fig. 3; it being adjusted in its fastener which is here shown as comprising a narrow line such as ribbon or thread l6 one end of which is engaged with the inner marginal portion of the blank as at the base of the flange line with'the shieldis effected by forming the 10 line with a knotl9 and roving the line through an opening or eyelet 20 in the inner marginal portion of the shield from the outside so that,
the knot l9 will seat on the outer margin of the, opening 20; the knot being larger than such opening. The line is then passed through they," opening I! from the inside. of the shield orflangc i and is then extended along the outer faceof the flange to the opening l8 and br0ught through the latter from the outside so that the free end 20 of the line may be brought forwardly and upwardly from the innermargin of the shield and engaged with the-end portion of the line extendingbetweenthe openings H and 20.
"In applying the shield the line is adjusted so 1 as to overlie'the head as shown in Fig. 3; with the free end of the line fastened in place eithe by tying or by means of a hair pin. 7
When the shield is applied it will serve to protect the eyes and face of the wearer from streams of heated air delivered from a hair drier and permits the subject to utilize the eyes in reading or otherwise during the hair drying operation.
While I have shown and described a specific embodiment of my invention I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction set forth,
and the invention embraces such changes, modifications and equivalents of the parts and their vformation and arrangement as come within the purview of the appended claim.
I claim:
:A -shieldforaiziplication to the head of a person comprising adivided frustro-conical annulus 'of'fiex-ible sheet material, means for holding said annulus in various contracted positions with the divided portions overlapped to vary the diameter and circumferentialdimensions-thereof,
said annulus being formed with a" series or holes along its inner marginalportion, and aline rove through said-series'of holes havingone end' engaged with said annulus. v I v I j GERTRUDE STOVALLL-
