Description

R. E. SMlTH DOUBLE WALLED BOX Sept. 20, 1938;
Filed May 20, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet l INVENTOR. f/b/iam Z. 6/77/77? WM ATTORNEYS Sept. 20, 1938. R. E. SMITH DOUBLE WALLED BOX Filed May 20, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. lF/t/wfd Z 6/77/7/7 Patented Sept. 20, 1938 greater PATENT OFFICE DOUBLE-WALLED BOX Richard E. Smith, Kalamazoo, Mich, assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Application May 20,
13 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a double-walled paper box or receptacle formed of an integral blank scored for folding whichmay be shipped in the knockdown and readily set up for use.
Second, to provide a double-walled paper box in which there is comparatively little waste in forming the blank from a sheet of material.
Third, to provide a double-walled box in which the inner and outer walls are securely held in spaced relation and one which is quite rigid even when made of relatively light stock.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention and having a sliding or telescoping trating another step in the setting up of the box.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged horizontal view on line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
Fig. '7 is a plan view of the blank. Reference being had to the drawings, my improved box is preferably formed of an integral blank illustrated in Fig. 7 and comprising a bottom I, outer side walls 2, 2, and outer end walls 3, 3, joined to or extending from the side and end edges of the bottom. The blank is variously scored as indicated by dotted. lines 4 to facilitate folding. I
The outer side walls 2 have inner side wall extensions 5, 5, joined thereto by the top spacer members 6, 6,-While the outer end walls 3, 3 have inner end walls I, I joined thereto by the top spacer members 8, 8.
The inner side walls 5 have sealing flaps 9, 9 on their longitudinal edges which are provided with adhesive and lapped upon and secured to the bottom as clearly shown in the drawings. The outer side walls have end flap extensions l0 and H notched at l2 and I3 so that they may be set up and interlocked as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The end flaps l0 have inturned top spacer members M. It will be noted that the end flaps I0 1936, Serial No. 80,724 I are diagonally opposite so that a spacer member is provided at each end of the box.
The sidewall top spacer members 6 are provided with laterally disposed inwardly projecting tongues l5 which lie in the plane of the parts [4 when the box is set up, see Fig. 3.
The inner side wall members 5 have longitudinally projecting tongues [6 at the ends thereof. The inner side and end walls are shorter than the corresponding outer walls by approximately the width of the top spacer members.
The inner end walls 1 have out-turned bottom spacer members I! on their outer edges, these being turned outwardly to prevent the outward collapsing of the inner end walls or to support them in a substantially vertical position. The inner end walls have tongues l8 adjacent their upper edges, these tongues being turned outwardly and engaged under thetongues l5 when the box is set up. They are also provided with relatively short tongues or lugs [9 which snap behind or engage the end edges of the inner side walls below their tongues l6. In erected position, the inner end walls and their outwardly disposed spacer members I! are disposed behind the end edges of flaps 9, the said end edges abutting the walls and serving as cleats to resist displacement of the end walls.
To facilitate folding the upper edges of the tongues l8 are beveled at 20 so that suitable clearance is provided, permitting their engagement under the tongues I6. v
Preferably, V-shaped notches 2| are formed in the top spacer members l6 and the adjacent portion of the inner end walls, the apexes of these notches being in the folding line joining the inner end walls 1 to the top spacer members 8.
It will be noted that there is relatively little waste when the blank is cut or died out from the sheet or web.
The box may be shipped in the knockdown with the securing flaps 9 glued and readily set up by the user, the parts other than these inner side wall securing flaps being interlocking. The box may be formed of comparativelylight material and when set up is very secure and rigid.
In the embodiment illustrated, I provide a telescoping cover 22 having window openings 23 provided with a transparent window 24. It is obvious that other types of covers may be employed.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a very practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
