  • This invention relates to paper boxes of that class which are made by bending or folding a blank into the desired shape, and the objects of the invention are to provide a box of this character which has a maximum capacity relative to the amount of material used in making the box; to provide a box comprising two box sections which are constructed so that when they are placed together, the edges of the box have abutting relation and the box sections are retained in their associated relation by means of tabs forming extensions on the sides; to provide a box having such a construction that the blanks from which the boxes are made can be cut from sheet material with relatively little waste, and otherwise to improve boxes, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

This invention relates to paper boxes of that class which are made by bending or folding a blank into the desired shape, and the objects of the invention are to provide a box of this character which has a maximum capacity relative to the amount of material used in making the box; to provide a box comprising two box sections which are constructed so that when they are placed together, the edges of the box have abutting relation and the box sections are retained in their associated relation by means of tabs forming extensions on the sides; to provide a box having such a construction that the blanks from which the boxes are made can be cut from sheet material with relatively little waste, and otherwise to improve boxes, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
In order to give an understanding of my invention, I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described, after which thenovel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective View of a box embodying my invention showing the two sections of the box in separated relation;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box showing the-two sections closed;

Fig. 5 shows a blank from which the box is made.
My improved box comprises the two box members 1 and 2, each of which is provided with a bottom section and a side section. The box member 1 has the bottom section 3 and the side section 4: 4, 5-5. The box memher 2 has the bottom 6 and the side sections 7 7, 8 8. When the two box members 1 and 2 are arranged in closed relation the edges of the sides 5 and 8 have an abutting relation so that the capacity of the box is the combined capacities of the two box members 1 and 2. The two side sections 4 and'box member 1 have extensions or tabs 9 which overlie a portion of the side sections 8 of the box member 2, and the side sections 7 of the box member 2 have extensions or tabs 10 whlch overlie a portion of the faces 5 of the box member 1. These tabs will ppeferably be inserted into the box sections so as to overlie the inner faces of the sides thereof, although this is not essential. In either case, the engagement of the tabs 9 and 10 with the sides of the box members serves to hold said box members in their closed relation. Smcethe sides 5 and 8 of the box have an abutting relation when the box members are closed together, the capacity of the box will be the combined capacities of the two box sections and thus a box is produced which has a maximum capacity relative to the amount of material which is used in making the ;box.
, In the drawing, I have shown a box having a square bottom so that the side sections 4 and 5 as well as the sides 7 and 8 have the same length, but the invention is not limited to a square box as the sides 4 and 8 might be either longer or shorter than the sides 5 and 7 without departing from the invention.
Where the box is square as herein illustrated the two box members 1 and 2 are duplicates in every respect, but if the box were made with the sides 4: and 8 either longer or shorter than the sides 5 and 7, then the two box members would differ simply in the fact that the extensions on one box member would be on the long sides while those on the other box member would be on the short side.
When the box is square, as herein shown, then both box members can conveniently be made from a blank such as shown in Fig. 5 and which is cut and scored so as to pre sent the bottom section a, the two side sections 6, each having a wing 0 extending from the end thereof, and the other side sections (1, each of which is longer than the Side sections 6 by an amount equal to the lengthof the extension or tab 9 or 10.
The box blank will be scored along the lines 11 where the side sections join the bottom a and also along the lines 12 where L the wings a join the ends of the sides In making a box from this'blank the sides I) will be folded up at right-angles to the bottom a and the wings a will be turned inwardly so that they extend along the junction line 11 between the bottom a and the sides 03'. The sides 03 will then be folded up and glued or otherwise fastened to the wings a, said wings overlying the'inside of the sides d. The wings a are preferably of such a length that when they are folded up the ends thereof will meet, as seen in Fig: 4:. A box member made in this way has the four sides corresponding to the sides 8 8, 7 7 of the box member 2, for instance, and two of the sides, to wit: the sides 7 7, are provided with extensions or tabs, such as indi-- cated at 9 or 10 in Fig. 4:.
' To assemble or unite the two box members-they are placed in the relative position shown in Fig. 1 so that the tabs or extensions 9 9 of the box member 1 come opposite the sides 8 of the box member 2 and the tabs or extensions 10 of the box member 2 come opposite the sides 5 of the box member 1, and then the two box members are brought together with the edges of their sides-in abutting relation and with the tabs 9 9 overlapping the sides 8 and the tabs 10 10 overlapping thesides 5. I will preferably insert all the tabs inside of the box so that the tabs 9 9 will overlap the inner face of the sides 5. By this means the two box members will be securely held together.
Since the edges of the sides 5 and 8 merelycome into meeting relation when the two members of the box are closed together, the closed box will have a capacity equal to the combined capacities of the box members and hence a box of maximum capacity relative to the amount of material will be provided. Moreover, the shape of the blank is such that it can be economically cut from sheet material with a minimum of waste.
When the two box members are in closed relation the corners 13 of the box member 2 engage the corners 14 of the box member 1 thereby limiting the extent towhich these two members can be closed together.
I claim: I
1. A box comprising two members, each having a bottom and sides, said members being placed in closed relation with the edges of their sides meeting each other, two of the sides of each section being provided with tabs which overlap a portlon of the corresponding side of the other member.
2. A box comprising two members, eachv having a bottom and sides, said members being placed in' closed relation with the edges of their sides meeting each other, two of the sides of each section being provided with tabs which overlap the inner face of the corresponding side of the other member.
