Description

Jan. 2, 1934. L, w. SUTHERLAND BOX Filed March 25, 1932 INVENTOR Logs W Sufhcrland 6fl w TTORNEYS' Patented Jan. 2, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE to Mich., a corporation Application March 23,
5 Claims.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved box or container having an inset integral cover which is very secure.
Another object is to provide a box or container of this type having a closure consisting of overlapping integral top flaps which are disposed in a plane below the top of the container and are provided with interlocking means for preventing the accidental opening thereof.
A still further object is to provide a paper or cardboard box which is simple in construction yet strong and durable.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing; in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention with the closure flaps partially closed.
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the flaps completely closed and locked in position, and
Fig. 4 illustrates the blank.
Referring to the drawing, the blank 1 of suitable box material is shaped as illustrated to provide the entirely integral closed container 2. The blank 1 comprises a bottom portion 3 having side wall flaps 4 extending from opposite edges thereof and adapted to be bent upwardly along the scored lines 5. The bottom 3 is provided with flared side walls 6 extending therefrom and adapted to be folded about the scored lines '7. Connected to the side walls 6 along the scored line 8 are side wall extensions 9 which are adapted to be folded in overlapping relation with each other with the side wall flaps 4 therebetween as illustrated by Fig. 2. The inner side walls 9 have integral beads or rib-like offsets 10 therein which provide supporting shoulders or seats for the overlapping closure flaps.
At opposite ends of the blank 1 and connected thereto by integral connecting portions 11 are.
closure flaps 12 having laterally extending tongues 13 at the ends thereof. The connecting portion 11 is connected to the side wall 6 along the scored line 14 and to the closure flap 12 along the scored line 15. The connecting portions 11 are tapered at 16 to fit the flared interior of the side walls of the container.
The side walls 9 at one end of the blank 1 are Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo,
of Michigan 1932. Serial No. 600,737
provided with closure flaps 17 which are connected thereto by the integral connecting portions 18 along the scored lines 19 and 20. The integral connecting portions 18 are tapered at 21 for accommodating the connectingv portion to the flare in the walls of the container. At the juncture between the connecting portion 18 and the closure flap 1'7 is provided a slot 22 for receiving the tongues 13 of the closure flaps 12. The closure flaps 17 are also provided with tongues 23 which are adapted to overlap and interlock with each other as illustrated by Fig. 1 when the closure flaps 17 are folded with their ends in overlapping relation.
The box is folded as indicated and after the contents have been placed therein the closure flaps 17 are folded in overlapping relation as described with the connecting portions 18 depending from the top 24 of the container. The closure flaps 12 are similarly folded in overlapping relation, the laterally projecting fingers 13 being depressed until they are received by the slots 22. A closed integral container results, having a depressed cover which holds the side walls of the container in assembled relation and constitutes a substantially rigid cross structure which offers considerable resistance to the collapse of the side walls. The inset cover also improves the appearance of the box and the interlocking means prevent the accidental opening thereof.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations, as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A box formed of an integral blank and comprising a bottom portion and opposed side Wall portions extending from opposite edges of the bottom portion, and side wall flaps extending from the other opposite edges of the bottom portion, said opposed side wall portions having laterally extending overlapping side wall extensions on their vertical edges and outer cover flap extensions at their outer end, said outer cover flap extensions having laterally projecting tongues at the ends thereof, the inner of said side wall extensions having inner cover flap extensions at their outer ends terminating in mengaging tongues, said inner and outer cover flap extensions having spaced parallel scores to facilitate folding within the side walls in inset overlapping relation, said inner cover flap extensions having holes therein positioned to receive the tongues on the outer cover flaps whereby the cover flaps are retained in overlapping interlocked relation and an inset cover provided.
2. A box formed of an integral blank and comprising a bottom portion and opposed side wall portions extending from opposite edges of the bottom portion, said opposed side wall portions having laterally extending overlapping side wall extensions on their vertical edges and outer cover flap extensions at their outer ends, said outer cover flap extensions having laterally projecting tongues at the ends thereof, the inner of said side wall extensions having inner cover flap extensions at their outer ends terminating in coengaging tongues, said inner and outer cover fiap extensions having spaced parallel scores to facilitate folding within the side walls in inset overlapping relation, said inner cover fiap extensions having holes therein positioned to receive the tongues on the outer cover flaps whereby the cover flaps are retained in overlapping interlocked relation and an inset cover provided.
3. A box comprising a bottom portion and opposed side wall portions extending from opposite edges of the bottom portion, said opposed side wall portions having laterally extending overlapping side wall extensions on their vertical edges, one pair of opposed side walls having coacting outer cover flaps provided with laterally tioned to receive the tongues on the outer flaps whereby the cover flaps are retained in inset overlapping relation.
4. A container having flared side walls, a pair of opposed top flaps connected to opposed side walls by tapered connecting portions, said flaps having coacting tongues when sald flaps are folded inwardly at a plane below the top of the container, said flaps having slots at the juncture with said connecting portions, and a pair of opposed top flaps connected to the other walls by tapered connecting portions and having tongues engageable with said slots when said flaps are overlapped above said first named flaps.
5. A container having side walls, a pair of opposed end closure flaps connected to opposed side walls by connecting portions, said flaps having coacting tongues when said flaps are folded inwardly at a plane spaced from the end of the container, said connecting portions having slots, and a pair of opposed end closure fiaps connected to the other'wallsby connecting portions and having tongues engageable with said slots when said flaps overlap said first named flaps.
