Description

Novr 14, 1933. PRIQR 1,935,522
APPARATUS FOR SCORING PAPER, CARDBOARD, OR LIKE MATERIAL Filed Oct. 17, 1932 Patented Nov. 14, 1933 APPARATUS FOR SCORING PAPER, I BOARD, R LIKE MATERIAL Alfred Prior, Deptford, London, England Application October 17,. 1932, Serial No. 638,242,
' and in Great Britain October 27, 1931 1 Claim. (01. 16460) This invention is for improvements in apparatus for scoring paper, cardboard or like material, such as is used for example in packing and box making machinery.
5 The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the scoring apparatus may be adjusted to give any desired depth to each separate, score to suit the particular work in hand.
Referring to the drawing which shows one way of carrying the invention into efiect, a scoring roller 1 provided with circumferential ridges or blades 2 spaced apart the required amount is arranged to co-operate with a pressure roller hereinafter described, and the material to be scored is fed between the two rollers in the usual manner.
The pressure roller is furnished with plain surfaces at the position where the blades on the scoring roller meet the same so that the scoring is effected entirely by the blades, the pressure roller serving only to support the material.
In accordance with the present invention, the portions. of the pressure roller, at the points where the blades on the scoring roller are located,
vided with a groove or keyway 5, and the collars are merely fitted in positi-on by set screws 6 which enter thesaidkeyway.
The ends of the groovedspindle carry parallel collars '7 of exactly the same diameter which run on plain portions of the roller 1 which carries the scoring blades 2, and these parallel collars form gauge rings for setting the two rollers parallel, after which the tapered collars may be adjusted as required.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
In apparatus for scoring "fibrous material, the combination with arotatable shaft provided with a plurality of continuous circumferentially extending'scoring projections, of a second shaft supported for rotation adjacent to and substantially parallelwith said first named shaft, a plutwo rality of annular members supported on said second shaft for rotation therewith and for adjustment axially thereof, said members having conical peripheral portions disposed in spaced relation with corresponding scoring projections to effect scoring of material passing between the shafts, means for retaining said members against axial displacement on said second shaft and in predetermined spaced relation with said projections to control thedepth of scoring, and annular gauge rings carried by one of said shaftsadja- ;cent the ends thereof and engaging the other shaft to maintain correct spacing between the shafts and between the scoring projections and the cooperating annular members.
