IMPROVEMENT IN DENTISTS 0R BARBERS CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,919, dated April 21, 1874; application filed v February 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. OOATES,
of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and .Figure 1 is a front elevation of my 1111-.
proved chair. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation through the middle of the seat and back. Fig.3 is a detailed section of the seat and back. Fig. 4 is a plan of the seat; and Fig. 5 is a section of the seat on the line 00 w.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the reversible portion of the seat, and B the reversible portion of the back. 0 is a shaft or rod, on which seat A is pivoted. D is the lower pivot of the back, and F the universal joint, by which they are coupled together, so that the seat may be turned simultaneously with the back, and by it, the back being turned by hand, applied directly to it. The back B is fastened by a spring-bolt, a, and the seat by a springbolt, b, which en t gage the notched projections 61 and e, respect ively. Bolt a is connected, by a cord, f, with bolt b passing over a pulley g, so that both can be pulled back by pulling on the projecting part h of bolt 9. A foot-bar, z, is connected, by rod j and bell-crank k, with bolt 1), to actuate it in large chairs. I is the footrest, which is supported 011 long arms J, held at the front by an adjusting-screw, K, work ing through a nut in cross-bar I, held in the socket 7c of bracket K, and pivoted to the legs of the chairs at L. This adj listing-screw is connected, bya universal joint, M, with the crank-shaft N, which extends out through the chair at or about the righthand rear corner, where it is most convenient for the attendant to reach it, from his position behind the chair, to operate it. jointed projections of the back and seat, forming a hinge in the axis of the universal joint F, for reclining the back.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with pivoted seat and back, having projections d c, of the bolt 1) h, and spring-bolt a, connected by a cord, f, passing over a pulley, g, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with connected seatbolt b, and spring-bolt a, of the lever 70, rod j, and foot-bar t, as and for the purpose speciiied.
FRANCIS J. ooAT'ns.
