L.S. HAYES. Folding-Chairs.
No. 221,062. Patented Oct. 28,1879;
Wp'fnessesk UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS S. HAYES, OF CORTLAND VILLAGE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,062, dated October 28,;1879; application filed June 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs S. HAYES, of Cortland Village, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In said drawings the same letters on the different figures indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my folding rocking-chair, showing more particularly the front part and seat. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the back and arrangement of the parts. Fig. 3 is a plain' side view of the chair, Fig. 4 is a section of a joint, showing how the joint is made by the rounds of the chair. Fig. 5 is a view of the chair folded.
The object and purpose of my invention is to improve the construction of folding chairs.
To this end my invention consists in the combination described of the front legs and arms connected together by rounds, which support upright spindles to form the back of the chair; and in the combination, in a chair, of the back-frame and seat-frame and supporting-standards with the. rounds of the chair, the latter forming the connecting-joints by which the various parts are secured together, all as more fully hereinafter specified.v
In the drawings, A is a straight arm, as shown. It is connected to the leg 0 and piece D by the working-joint G, (the.construction of this joint being shown in-Fig. 4.) Piece D is jointed to the leg E by a Workingjoint, M, and leg E is jointed to rocker F by a working-joint, L. The leg 0 is also jointed to said rocker F by a working-joint, K. All the joints Gr, M, L, and K are made by the ends of the rounds T, X, NV and S, respectively.
I is a cross-bar, and H is a round, into which are placed the spindles B, forming, with arm A, the back of the chair.
J and Q are two rounds, upon which the pliable material composing the seat is fastened. This seat N'can be made of any suitable material, such as carpet, leather, &c. I
usually use Brussels carpet. The back of the chair can be made of carpet, leather, or any other suitable material, and may be ornamented as desired.
It will be noticed that the position of the arm A and leg 0 and back of the chair make A a back post of the chair, as well as an arm. It will'be noticed, also, that the position of G centrally balances the chair, and that the three pieces D, O, and A are connected by a single joint, G. This is an important feature of my invention.
The frame-work of both sides of the chair is the same, and the description of one side fully describes the other, as will be seen from the drawings.
The joints made by the rounds are shown in Fig. 4, (the joint G being there shown.) The holes through D and G are about onethirty-second of an ,inch larger in diameter than. the hole through A. The end of the round T is made to fit snugly in A, and is substantially fastened therein by glue. In the other joints, consisting of two pieces, the outer piece is fastened to the round by glue, as above described.
This form of joint makes warping v and twisting impossible, gives a good bearing,
and is cheap; but any other joint made by screws, bolts, or rivets can be used, if desired.
The chair is folded up by raising up the seat and pulling up the rockers, and when folded is as shown in Fig. 5, and is unfolded by pulling out the said seat and rockers.
Having thus described thezconstruction and use of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the arms A, legs 0, and rounds H and I, connected by spindles, as shown and described.
2. In a folding rocking-chair, the combination of the rockers F, rounds S and WV, legs 0, D, and E, rounds X and-T, rounds J, Q, and H, seat N, spindles B, cross-piece l, and arms A, substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two.
witnesses.
