UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

Application filed. July 6, 1917. Serial No. 178,938.
HATBOX.
1,337,087, Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADLINE M. than, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vallev City, in the county of Barnes and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatboxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hat boxes, and has for one of its objects to provide a hat box, which is capable of being used on shelves and upon which it is possible to pile additional objects or more boxes, yet permit the user to remove the hat therefrom or place the same therein without removlng the cover or the objects placed. upon the same.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hat box having a hinged front wall, and a removable cover, and flexible means whereby the cover and movable front wall may be held in closed position.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hat box having a removable cover, and a hinged front wall, one wall of the cover being hinged and the movable front wall of the box and wall of the cover being provided with fasteners upon which is adapted to be arranged a flexible element for holding the cover and hinged front wall in closed position, thereby permitting the hinged front wall to be readily pulled downwardly to permit the contents of the box to be removed without disturbing the objects placed on the cover.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hat box equipped with novel means whereby the cover and hinged front wall may be securely fastened by the flexible element to the side walls thereof, thus permitting the box to be readily shipped or transferred from place to place and prevent the walls from collapsing.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hat box of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the hat box as made in accordance with this invention, showing the front wall and cover in closed position,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the front wall open,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end perspective view illustrating the manner in which the front wall and cover are held in closed position for shipment.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all. the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the box in its entirety, and it comprises in its construction, a bottom wall 2, side walls 3 and a rear or back wall 4. A front wall 5 is hingedly secured to the forward edge of the bottom wall 2 by a suitable strip of fabric 6 secured to the inner side thereof as illustrated in Fig. 2. The strip 6 permits the front wall 5 to be read ily moved into opened or closed position as shown.
A removable cover 7 is provided for the box and has a top wall 8, rear wall 9 and side walls'lO, and a hinged front wall 11. The hinged front wall is secured to the top wall 8 by a suitable strip of fabric 12 secured to the inner side thereof as shown in Fig. 2 to permit the front wall 11 to be swung into open or extended position.
The front wall 5 of the box is provided adjacent its upper longitudinal edge and near each side edge thereof, with the disk fasteners 14, which fasteners are spaced from the surface of the box as shown. The front wall 11 of the cover 8 is also provided adjacent each end with disk fasteners 15, which are located in direct alinement with the disk fasteners 14 of the front wall of the box. A flexible securing element 16 has one end secured to each of the disks 14 as shown, and when the cover is placed upon the upper open end of the box and the front wall 5 is in closed position, it is located behind or in rear of the movable front wall of the cover and the flexible tying element 7 is arranged around the disks 15 and 14 respectively to hold the cover and front wall in closed position.
The sidewalls 3 of the box are provided adjacent their upper edges and near the forward side edges thereof with disk fasteners 17, these fasteners being spaced from the front surface of the side walls and are adapted to receive the flexible element 16 thereabout or thereunder, which is then passed over to the disks 15 on the front wall of the cover 8 to facilitate the securing of the walls of the cover and box respectively in closed position to permit the box to be transmitted by delivery, and prevent the walls from collapsing during such delivery.
In use, it will be obvious that a hat box made in accordance with this invention may be placed upon a shelf and objects piled upon the top thereof, it being only necessary to remove the flexible element 16 from around the disks 15, give an outward pull thereon, pulling the front wall 5 of the box outwardly, and at the same time opening the front wall 11 of the cover, which permits access to the interior of the box so that a hat or other object may be replaced or taken therefrom in a quick and reliable manner without necessitating the removing of the vcover 8 therefrom.
What is claimed is:
A hat box comprising a bottom, rigid side .and rear walls extending'upwardly from the bottom, a front wall hingedly secured to the front edge of the bottom, disk fastening members secured to the outer face of the front walladj acent the upper corners thereof, disk fasteners secured to the outer face .vertical swinging movement, fastening menibers secured to the lunged front flange of the cover adjacent the corners thereof in vertical alinement with the first mentioned fasteners and flexible elements secured to the disk fasteners of the cover and adapted to be passed around the fasteners of the front and side walls to hold the front wall and cover in closed position.
