FRANK GRAMMICH, O1 BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HOLDER Eon DISK RECORDS.
Application filed September 16, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK GRAMMIOH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Holder for Disk Records, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a holder which while particularly adapted for holding disk records is capable of use for other purposes. More particularly, the invention is intended for embodiment in a holder for disk records, of a character to constitute a complete container for the records or adapted to be received on the shelves of talking machine cabinets.
The general object of the invention is to provide a holder for the indicated purpose formed of rigid material in the form of a case or container and so arranged as to accommodate a reasonable number of records that may be conveniently inserted or removed and to so form the container that it may be given back support after the manner of an easel to promote the accessibility of the records and their convenient handling.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a secure inter-engagement between the holder and its supporting member when in the supporting position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder in which swingable front closures are adapted to be held in the closed position by a hinged top closure.
The above objects and others as will appear are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved holder as indicated by the arrow 1 in Fig. 3 and closures, showing the same open;
Fig. 2 is a top view as indicated by arrow 2 in Fig. 3, showing the holder open and supported after the manner of an easel;
Fig. 3 is a lon itudinal vertical section on the line 33, Fig. 1, the doors being in closed position;
Fig. 4: is an end view of the closed holder, parts being broken away and others in section;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Serial No. 324,179.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the upper portion of the holder when closed.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a broad box-like container 10 is provided having rigid therein a series of partitions 11 of stiff material of successively increasing height from front to rear to present .a stepped form and to provide therebetween a series of compartments 11 of varying depths adapted to receive disk records of different heights. In the open front of the container 10 I provide swingable doors 12, the one having a flange 12' to overlap the other. The doors are hinged in any suitable manner preferably by the strips 13 of paper, fabric, or other suitable flexible material. The hinge connections may be reinforced if desired by a hinge strip it or a plurality thereof at the inner side, there bein indicated one of said strips for each door in Fig. 1.
The top rlosure 15 of the container 10 hinged at its rear edge to the said container at the back by a flexible connection 16 and said closure has a depending front flange 17 which may have applied thereto at the inner side an extension flange 17 of ornamental form so that the closure will present a depending member of substantial area adapted to lie outside of the front closures 12 when the latter are in the closed position.
To secure the closures in the closed position I provide tie tapes or ribbons 18, one end of each of which is secured to a side of the container 10 by any suitable means such as a pasted strip 19, so that the free ends of the tapes may be brought over the top of the closure 15 and tied, thereby holding both the top closure and the front closures securely in the closed position.
In order to support the container 10 on a table or the like at an inclined position to promote convenience in the removal of records from the said container and the placing of the records therein, I provide a hinge member 21 which may, as shown, extend the full width of the back of the container. Said member 21 is hinged at its upper edge to the back of the container below the top thereof by any suitable means such as a flexible strip 22 so that it may be folded against the back of the container or swung outwardly to an inclined position as in Figs. 1 and 3 to constitute an easel leg for said con tainer. Hinged to the lower edge of said leg 21 is an extension 23 which, when said member 21 is to be swung to a position close to and parallel with .said container, may be folded upwardly to lie between the space provided between the memberQl and the back of the container as clearly shown in Fig. 4-. The hinged connection between the member 23 and the le 21 may consist of a e flexible strip 24. When the supporting member 21. is swung outwardly to the inclined position, the hinged member 23 may be mo red to a position to be disposed laterally outward from the back of the container 10 'inflwhich position it is adapted to be locked tothecontainer by providing a depending lip 25 on said member 23 adapted to engage behind an upstanding lip 26 on the container at the back. The member 21 has a length so that the lower edge of said member will rest on a table surface or the like. .T he member 21 when in the folded position lies within the plane of the back of thecontainer.
ith the described constructiona series of the holders containing records may be stacked conveniently in any available article offurniture or on shelves but the dimensionso'f the holder in practice are such that single holders will be accommodated onthe shelves provided in many talking machine cabinets. The material forming the holder is stiff sothat the holder will maintain its shape and may be conveniently placed on the shelves or readily removed.
The partitions 11 are numbered at the sides insequence as at 27 and on the face of'the front l1 of the front compartment a corresponding series of numbered lines is produced as at 27*, said lines being adapted to receive the names of the records in the respective compartments of the container.
I would stateinconclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, 1 do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same ran be considerably varied wthout departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having .thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desirefto secure by Letters Patent: I
frholder ofthe class described including a box-like eontainerhaving a closed bark depressed within theplane of the rear edges of the sides of said' container, a fixed ui standing lip on the containerto the rear of said back and spacedfrom the latter, a mem her at the back of the container and hinged at its upper end to the latter to swing toward saiddpaek or to an outer inclined position to constitute a supporting leg, and a member hinged tosaid legvat itslower edge to fold parallel with the leg at the inner side of the latter or to be disposed transverselyand extend in the directionof the back of the container, said hinged member presenting a terminal at approximately right "angles thereto to extend downwardly and engage behind said lip when the le and hinged member. arein supporting position, the space betweenthe leg and the backofthecontainer when said leg is in folded position accommodatin the lateral terminal of the folding member so that said folding member and leg lie withintheplane of the side edges of the container at the backofthe latter.
