Description
C. L. DEPOLLIER. TAKE-UP DEVICE FOR wmsr STRAPS FOR WATCHES.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 9.1916- Patented May 29, 1917.
INVENTOR.
CHARLES L. DEPOLLIER, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TAKE-UP DEVICE FOR WRIST-STRAPS FOB, WATCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1917.
Application filed July 19, 1916. Serial No. 110,074.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. DEIPOL- Line, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, county of Kings, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Take-Up Devices for Wrist-Straps for \Vatches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates particularly to the clips or take-up devices by which the free ends of the straps or ribbons by which watches are carried upon the wrists of wearers may be secured to the standing parts of such straps or ribbons in adjusted positions. lVhile such wristlets, whether of leather or fabric, are sometimes made in two parts, separately attached to the watch and connected by an ordinary buckle, it is found that the most satisfactory form of wristlet, in use, is one which is secured at one end to the watch and at the other end is passed through a loop or eye secured to the watch and has its free end secured to the standing part of the wristlet by a device which permits the wristlet to be loosened or taken up readily with the fingers of one hand. The object of the present invention is to provide a very simple and inexpensive clip or takeup device of this general character which shall yet be thoroughly efficient. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a watch and a wrist-strap equipped with the improved clip.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the watch and wristlet shown in Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and at are respectively an end view and a top View of one form of the improved clip.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are respectively an end view, a top view and an edge view of a slightly difi'erent form of the clip.
The watch-case a is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as provided at diametrically opposite points with loops or eyes I) and 0 adapted for engagement with a wristlet (Z, which may be of leather or of any suitable fabric. At
one end, d, the wristlet d is engaged with the corresponding eye 0 by being looped about the same. The other or free end of the wristlet, as (Z is passed through the eye 6 and is provided at its extremity with the improved clip or take-up device e, by means of which the free end of the wristlet can be secured at any desired point to the standing part of the wristlet and easily released by the fingers of one hand of the wearer. The improved clip or take-up device may be formed of wire. In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and at it is formed of a single piece of wire, bent substantially in S-shape, and comprising a middle bar 6 and two outer bars 6 and e, substantially parallel with the middle bar and preferably in substantially the same plane therewith, and two hook pieces 6* and c which may be secured to the middle bar a, at its ends, in any suitable manner. Preferably both bars or members 0 e are free at their ends and are adapted to yield and to be engaged with the hook members. Further, although one of the bars or members, as 6 may be straight, the other member, as 6 has in its middle portion a bend, 6, toward the middle bar 6 so that, as hereinafter described, it may bear against the strap inserted between the two members.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the middle member 6 has at its ends headers or transverse members e and 6 one portion of each of which is formed as a hook, while the other portion has pivoted thereto the corresponding bar or member 0 or 6 the latter having a bend e as before.
In the application of this clip to the wristlet, the free end of the wristlet, being formed with a loop CF, is engaged with the straight member 6 which is then engaged with the corresponding hook. The member 6 having been unhooked and opened slightly is then slipped under the standing part of the wristlet, when the wristlet is on the wrist of the wearer, and is then engaged with its hook 0 The tension of the strap, exerted on the bar 6 of the clip, tends to pull the clip toward the plane of the strap and therefore to bend the strap as it passes over one bar and under another, thereby making it difficult to move the clip on the standing part of the strap. This resistance to movement is further increased by the pressure of the bend a of the member 6 against the standing part of the strap. It will be found that when the wristlet is in position on the wrist of the wearer and drawn somewhat snugly there will not be any accidental movement of the clip on the strap and therefore no accidental loosening of the strap.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a wrist strap, connecting devices therefor including a takeup device which consists of three substantially parallel members, each of the outer members being connected to the middle member at one end and free at the other end, the middle member having means to engage the free end of each outer member, the Wrist strap being threaded loosely between one 01 the outer members and the middle member for frictional sliding engagement therewith and having its end secured to the other of the outer members.
2. In combination with a wrist strap, connecting devices therefor including a take-up device which consists of three substantially parallel members, each of the outer members being connected to the middle member at one end and free at the other end, the middle member having means to engage the free end of each outer member, the wrist strap being threaded loosely between one of the outer members and the middle member for frictional sliding engagement therewith and having its end secured to the other of said outer members, the first named outer memer having a bend toward the middle member to press upon the strap when it is in place between said two members.
This specification signed. this 17th day of July, A. D. 1916.
CHARLES L. DEPOLLIER.
