SECURING DEVICE FOR WRIST-WATCHES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED S. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, county of Kings, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Devices for VVrist-VVa-tches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.

This invention relates particularly to devices by which straps or ribbons are connected to watches which may be worn either as wrist-watches or in other ways, and particularly to watches provided with disappearing eyes opposite the bows. A convertible watch, as such a watch is called, if provided with an eye opposite the bow or opposite another similar eye, whether the same is disappearing or not, may have the eye engaged directly by a chain or expansion link bracelet, but if the watch is to be worn on a strap or ribbon a metal fastening device must be interposed between the strap or ribbon and the watch. The object of this invention is to provide an improved securing device or fastening device for such a pur pose as that just referred to, which shall be more pleasing in appearance than the devices sometimes employed and shall also be more convenient in application and equally secure. The improved device comprises a narrow block or bar which is adapted to receive the projecting eye of the watch, is provided with means, easily releasable, for engaging the eye, may be fitted snugly to the body of the watch, and is adapted to be engaged directly by the strap or ribbon. The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawing in which it is illustrated and in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a watch with a wrist-strap and connecting devices which embody the invention.

with the connecting device in section on the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 2.

The wristlet or band on which the watch is to be carried, may be of leather, ribbon or other suitable material and of any suitable character. lt is shown in Fig. 1 as having two parts (Z and 6 connected by an ordinary buckle 7. Each part is looped, at the end neXt the watch, about a bar which forms a part of the corresponding connecting device g or it. The watch a is shown as provided with the usual winding and setting crown 7) and as provided also with eyes 0 and c which may be of the disappearing type, each adapted, however, to project from the watch-case, substantially as shown in Fig. 5. As the two securing devices 9 and h, shown in Fig. 1, are identical in construction a description of one will suffice for both. The securing device it comprises a narrow block or bar h which is preferably curved 011 one face, as if, lengthwise, on the same radius as the watch-case, so as to conform substantially thereto, and is also dished on the same face, as indicated at 71. so. as to rest at the edges against the watch-case. The block 72 is also provided centrally with a recess or opening h of a size suitable to receive the projecting eye 0 A latch 7?, preferably constructed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is adapted to engage the eye 0 when it has been introduced in the recess or opening it and prevent its withdrawal. As shown, the latch is pivoted in the block h, as at h, is provided with a stud h to pass through a hole 7L8 in the block and through the aperture of the eye 0 and with a friction pin k to enter a friction hole k in the block and prevent accidental movement of the latch. The block is also provided with a bail '5, preferably pivoted, as at i, about which the strap or ribbon may be looped.

In the use of the device, the eye 0 being extended and the latch its being open, the block it is applied to the watch, the eye 0 entering the recess or opening h then the latch k is pressed down, causing the stud h" to enter the aperture of the eye 0 and thereby lock the securing device to the watch. It will be observed that if the block is properly fitted the device will be rigid with respect to the watch and will appear to be in efl'ect a portion of the watch-case.

It will be understood that various changes in details of form and construction may be made to suit different watches and difi'erent designs of the supporting devices.

I claim as my invention:

1. A securing device for securing a wristlet to a watch which has an extended eye, comprising a block adapted for engagement with the wristlet and having a recess or opening to receive the extended eye of the watch, and means carried by the block to engage the eye and retain the block in fixed relation with the watch;

2. A securing device for securing a wristlet to a watch which has an extended eye, comprising a block adapted for engagement with the wristlet and having a recess or opening to receive the extended eye of the watch and a latch carried by the block and adapted to enter the eye and retain the block in fixed relation with the watch.

8. A securing device for securing a wrist let to a watch which has an extended eye, comprising a block having a recess or opening to receive the extended eye of the watch, means carried by the block to engage the eye and retain the block in fixed relation with the watch, and a bail carried by the block for engagement with the wristlet.

4. A securing device for securing a wristlet to a watch which has an extended eye,

Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents comprising a block formed on one face to fit against the watch and having a recess or opening to receive the extended eye of the watch, and means carried by the block to engage the eye and retain the block in fixed relation with the watch;

5. A securing device for securing a wristlet to a watch which has an extended eye, comprising a block adapted for engagement with the wristlet and having a recess or opening adapted to receive the extended eye of the watch, and a transverse opening through the walls of the recess, and a latch pivoted on the blockand having a stud to enter the transverse opening and the eye of the watch.

6. A securing device for securing a wristlet to a watch which has an extended eye, comprising a block adapted for engagement with the wristlet and having a recess or opening adapted to receive the extended eye of the watch, and a transverse opening through the walls of the recess, and a latch pivoted on the block and having a stud to enter the transverse opening and the eye of the watch, said latch having frictional engagement with the block to prevent accidental movement thereof.
