END-GATE.
Specification otLettt-rs Patent.
Patented Fel. 12?,
Application led January 3, 1917. Serial Ho. 140,423.
To all whom lf/ay concern.'
Be it k'nbivn that I, CHARLES B. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residin at Panora, in the county of Guthrie and tate of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in End-Gates, of which the fol owing is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in end gates for wagons or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an end gate having a removable section, with means for actuating the same and locking it in closed position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an end gate which will be Asimple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efiicient in' use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more -fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application and in which;
Figure 1 is a transverse` sectional view taken through the end gate;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a wagon body with the end gate in position;
Fig. 3 is a. horizontal sectional view taken through the end gate and adjacent portions of a wagon body; 4
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the main straps;
Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the locking straps, and
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on the lines 6 6 of Fig. 3. N ,A
Referring to the accompanying drawings by corresponding characters of reference throughout'the several views, the numeral 7 designates in general a wagon body compris- 'ing a bottom 8 and opposite sides` 9. The
end of the wagon body is closed'by an end gate 10 which consists of upper and lower plates 11 and 12 the former of which is cut out to receive the latter.
A pair of straps 12 arc secured to the rear face of the end gate 10 adjacent its opposite ends and are formed with upper bearings 13 adapted to receive an attaching rod 14 by means of which the said end gate is secured inits normal position. These straps extend vertically adjacent the opposite ends of the cut out portion 15 in which the section 12 is located, and extend into said cut out portlon 15 at the upper corners thereof as shown at 16, to prevent the outward move4 ment of the upper edge of the section 12. The lower ends of these straps 12 are bent laterally as at 17 forming stops which engage the lower edge out' the member 12 and prevent the outward movement of the lower edge of the said section.
imilar straps 18 are secured to the side of the section 12 adjacent the ends thereof and are otl'Set at their lower ends as at 1.9
formation 26 at the lower ends of the bail 21,
as the upper portion 27 of the bail is swung downwardly, the section 12 is rocked upwardly and inwardly passing into the wagon, whereupon the contents will be discharged through the cut away portion '15 in the section 11.
A suitable retaining clip 28 is provided for retaining the bail in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 while a suitable handle 29 is secured to the section 12 by means rof which the same can be manually operated if desired. y
In order to reinforce the end gate 10, suitable strips 30 may be secured to the inner side of the same, and the fastenings which secure the same to the end gate may be en tended to fasten the straps 12 in position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be manifest that an end gate is provided which will fulfil all of the necessaryl requirements of such a device, und it should. be understood in this Connection that various vminor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim. without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the aci-- vantagcs of the invention. HavingI thus fully described the invention what I claim is new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
In an end gate, a pair of plates, one plate gri being cui; away 'and th@ @they plaie ied in the sind cut ui/ay: pol-mon, straps secured to 1th@ adjacent eds of 'she pates, an interlocka ing engagcmeznt beween said straps, a haii having cranks thereon seemed to the straps ai 'the opposite plates ywhereby Wham sind bail is swung downwardly one pate will be rcked may from the cui; away portion of mmm? 11h@ other pate, and a @curing rod passing through the straps of @we of the plates.
` u iestmony whercn affix my signature in the presence of' ivm-witnesses.
