-' EDWIN W. KUEHN, OF MILWAUKEE, WVISGONSIN.
BOX FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 330,986, dated November 24, 1885.
Application filed December 16, 1884. Serial No. 150,476. (No model.)
To alZ'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN W. KUEHN, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in box-fasteners, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box fitted. with a fastening device embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the said box, showing the cover in the closed position.
A A indicate the box-body, and B is the cover. Close to the upper edge of the box end A is fastened the cleat or strip a, projecting on the inner face of the said end. On the corresponding end of the cover B is the strip 1), which is notched in its upper face and out er edge, so as to leave between it and the inner face of the cover a recess or groove, 1), the said strip 1) being fastened at such points of the said cover, so that the recess or groove will lie opposite the strip a of the box end A. The opposite end of the cover is provided with a similarly-notched strip, 12 and on the inner face of the end A of the box is mounted the movable fastening-strip O. This strip is designedto be received in the groove or recess 1) left between the'said strip 1) and the cover B. The strip 0 is connected in any suitable manner, but preferably, as shown, to sheetiron plate 0. To this plate is loosely attached the wire frame 0, which is adapted to slide up or down on the staples c 0 fastened in the inner face of the box end A", andis designed to secure the fastening-strip to the box end, so that it can be lifted up high enough beyond the upper edge of the same to be thrown slightly outward and disengaged from the recess or groove of the strip b The sheet-iron plate 0 is centrally perforated, as shown at a, and in this perforation the inner end of the screw-bolt G is received when the cover B has been brought down in position. This bolt is passed through the correspondingly-perforated box end A and screws into a threaded perforation, 0", made in the nut-plate 0 fastened in the inner face of the said box end, which is hollowed out to receive the nut 0 formed on the rear of the said plate.
From the above description and the drawings the manipulation of the cover and its fastening is readily understood. The strip 12 being first set in position over the strip a,the fasteiiingstrip O, that has been drawn upward, as shown in Fig. 1, is bent slightly outward on its guiding-frame until the corresponding end of the cover has been brought down low enough to allow ofthesaid strlp being inserted in the recess orgroove I). Then both the cover and the fastening-strip are lowered 1n position against the upper edges of the box, and by afew turns of the screw-bolt O the cover is secured in place. Obviously the loosening of the bolt will free the fasteningstrip, and as the cover is lifted the said strip may be readily disengaged from therecess and the cover may be bodily removed.
I have represented and described my fastening device as applied to the ends of the box, but I may also use it on the s des w thout departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a goods box or package, in combination with a cover provided with transverse notched bars fastened close to its ends 'or sides, and a box having a retaining-strip fastened in one of its ends or sides, a movable or flexible strip suitably connected to the opposite end or side of the said box, and adapted to be received into the notch of the transverse bar on the corresponding end orside of the cover, and a temporary securing device, substantially as set forth.
2. In a goods box or package, the combination of the box-body A, transverse bar a, the cover B, having notched strips b b", the movable fasteningstrips O, sheet-iron plate 0, having perforation at 0*, wire frame a, staples c a, nut-plate c and bolt 0, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN 1-1. KUEHN.
