- IMPROVEMENT IN END-GATES FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,023, dated May 19, 1874; application filed February 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. Hnwrcan, of Pana, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in End-Board Fastenings, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish a durable and convenient fastening for the endboards of wagons, and convenient means for adjusting it in unloading the wagon; and it consist-sin the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is a back end view of the wagon, showing the end-board.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A are the side-boards, and B is the bottom board, of the wagon-box. O is the end board. I) D represent plates on the ends of the side-boards A A, which plates are riveted or made fast to the side-boards. The 'lower ends of these plates book under and support the bottom board, as seen at EEh F are hook-recesses in the edges of these plates, and the ends of the side-boards are cut out to correspond. These hook-recesses F receive the ends of the fasteningbars G. These bars are screwed or riveted to the end-board, as seenin Fig. 2. The parts which enter the recesses F project and have each a flat bolt-head, H, which prevents the side of the wagon-body from spreading. From the two upper heads H buttonpins I project, to which are attached the ends of the chains J. K K are hooks firmly attached to the side-boards A.
' In unloading the wagon it is sometimes necessary to deliver the contents back from the wagon-body. For this purpose I adjust the end-board, as seen in Fig. 1, on a level with the bottom of the wagon-body, and support it in that position by the chains J, attached to the hooks K, and by the two lower fasteningbars, which are dropped into the two lower hook-recesses L L.
Fig. 2 represents the end-board as closed. The fastening-bars G drop into the recesses F, which brings the top of the end-board to a level with the top of the side-boards.
For ordinary purposes the end-board is sufficiently fastened by the hooks; but for greater security bolts M M may be applied, which engage with recesses in the side-boards, as indicated in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An end-board, G, provided with fasteningbars Gr, having flange-heads H, in combination with side plates D, having hook-recesses F F as shown and described.
2. An end-board, 0, provided with bars Ga supplementary bolts M M, buttonpins I I, and
chains J, in combination with side plates 1), books L L, hooks E E, and chain-hooks K, all
constructed as and for the purpose specified.
