Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an electrode for electrolysis which is effective in reducing hydrogen overvoltage and is highly durable in electrolysis of water or alkali metallic halide by providing a covering layer consisting of platinum group metals or their oxide on an Ni or Ni alloy substrate.
CONSTITUTION: A substrate consisting of Ni or Ni alloy (e,g., "Inconel" of Ni- Cr-Fe type which is a commercially marketed high Ni alloy) is prepared. The structure of this substrate may be any of plate, bar or metallic screen. Thence, the surface of this substrate is subjected to preferably grit blasting, whereby the substrate surface is roughened to 100W300 times the apparent surface area of the substrate. Next, a soln. of a compound of one kind of platinum, Rh, etc. (e.g.; chloroplatinic acid) is coated on the roughened surface of the substrate and is thermally decomposed to form a covering layer consisting of platinum group metals or their oxide, whereby the intended cathode for electrolysis is obtained.
