Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in one stage with a slight formation of by- products in high selectivity by reacting inexpensive aniline with ethylene glycol or hydrogen a nitrobenzene and ethylene glycol as raw materials in the presence of a catalyst in the liquid phase.
CONSTITUTION: An aniline, e.g. aniline or o-toluidine, is reacted with ethylene glycol or hydrogen is reacted with a nitrobenzene, e.g. nitrobenzene or o-nitrotoluene, and ethylene glycol in the liquid phase in the presence of a metal of Group VIII, e.g. iron or cobalt, and/or a catalyst containing active carbon to give indole or a derivative thereof. The reaction is carried out at 200W500°C, and the method is suitable for a small-scale production compared with the gas-phase reaction.
