Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of perfumery and amino acids, with a single stage process and low production of by-products, in high purity and selectivity, by the gas phase reaction of an aniline available at an extremely low cost with ethylene glycol in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound id obtained by the gas phase reaction of (A) an aniline such as aniline, o-toluidine, etc. with (B) ethylene glycol in the presence of (C) a catalyst containing cadmium sulfate and/or zinc sulfate. The amount of ethylene glycol is pref. 0.01W5mol, esp. 0.05W2mol per 1mol of the aniline. The cadmium sulfate and zinc sulfate can be used singly or as a mixture. The catalyst may be incorporated with other compounds such as a halide, nitrate, etc. of lithium, sodium, molybdenum, etc.
