Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain terephthalic acid of high purity with a low 4-carboxybenzaldehyde content and high transmittance, by oxidizing p-xylene in three stages by the SD method, and bringing the oxidation product into contact with H2 to reduce the amount of acetic acid solvent to be burned.
CONSTITUTION: p-Xylene is oxidized with O2 in acetic acid solvent in the presence of a catalyst containing a heavy metal and bromine to give terephthalic acid (by the SD method). In the process, 90wt% p-xylene is oxidized with O2 to terephthalic acid at 180W230°C in the first reactor and then further oxidized with O2 at a temperature 0W50°C lower than that in the first reactor in the second reactor. The oxidation product is then oxidized with O2 in the third reactor at a temperature of 250°C or above for 5W60min and then brought into contact with H2 in the fourth reactor at a temperature lower than that in the third reactor and 240°C or above. The resultant product is then crystallized and separated from the liquid to give the aimed terephthalic acid. The fourth reaction permits the reduction in the intermediate content in the terephthalic acid particles and the amount of the O2 to be supplied to the third reactor. Thus, the amount of the acetic acid to be burned can be suppressed.
