Abstract

Organosilicon polymers are made by contacting, and preferably heating, (1) (a) a cyclictrisiloxane of the formula (R2SiO)3, wherein each R is a monovalent hydrocarbon (saturated or unsaturated), halohydrocarbon or cyanoalkyl radical, or (b) a cyclic silethylenesiloxane of the formula <FORM:0999125/C3/1> wherein each X is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon (free from aliphatic unsaturation) or cyanoalkyl radical, with (2) a compound of the formula <FORM:0999125/C3/2> wherein R1 is a halogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon or hydrocarbonoxy radical of 1 to 10 C atoms, M is alkali metal atom or a tetraorganonitrogen or tetraorganophosphorus radical, m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, n is 1, 2 or 3 and m+n is 1, 2, 3 or 4. Component (1) can also be a mixture of 2 or more components (a), 2 or more components (b) or a mixture of components (a) and (b). The process may be effected in an organic solvent, and moisture should desirably be excluded or even removed. The catalysts, which are not siloxane bond rearrangement catalysts, need not be removed, though they may be removed as by washing with water. In a typical Example (1), 3,3,3-trifluoropropylmethylsiloxane cyclic trimer and lithium phenoxide were mixed together and heated in a sealed bottle for 17 hours at 177 DEG C. to yield a high polymer.
