Abstract

931,882. Cooling cylinder heads. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) LTD. May 9, 1962 [May 15, 1961], No. 17639/61. Class 7(2). In a liquid-cooled cylinder head including a cooling liquid space lying between upper and lower walls 2, 3, Fig. 2, and side walls 4, Fig. 1, and containing at least three castin hollow bodies, 8, 11, 14 distributed within the plan area of the cylinder head, the lower wall has an upward projection formed between the hollow bodies which contains horizontal coolant passages 16 extending between the hollow bodies and communicating with a downwardly extending coolant passage 18, a pipe 25 being provided to cause a flow of cooling liquid through the coolant passages in the projection. The hollow bodies constitute either inlet or exhaust passages, fuel injector or spark plug housings or a combustion pocket. The passages 16 may be cast or drilled. Cooling water from the cylinder jacket 21 passes through opening 23 and is directed by pipe 25 into the passage 18. In another embodiment the upward projection is formed between four exhaust ports of a two-stroke engine or in a modification each coolant passage may communicate with a separate downwardly extending coolant passage. In a modification the delivery passage is formed by a detachable pipe 40, Fig. 4.
