Abstract

Apparatus for introducing fluorine into the teeth comprises a mouthpiece electrode for holding a fluoride-containing substance in contact with the teeth, a second electrode adapted to contact the body of the person and a controllable source of electric current for connection to the electrodes. The mouth electrode preferably comprises a U-shaped member of channelled cross-section, similar to an impression tray, and this is enclosed in insulating material except for the inner surface of the channel and a projection which serves for electrical connection to a supply lead. This electrode is filled with a mixture of lithium fluoride and dry sodium alginate which, when it is moistened, forms a gel which can be pressed into intimate contact with the teeth. The second electrode may be a saliva tube, the greater part of which carries an insulating coating, or it may be a metal plate mounted behind a water absorbent fabric layer on an adhesive backing, so that it can be attached to the skin. The power supply may be a battery of, for example, 67.5 volts and the output from this is connected through a milliammeter, a time switch and a controlling resistance to the electrodes, the mouth electrode normally being negative. A flasher unit may be connected to the circuit to indicate when the apparatus is working and the meter may carry a double scale, indicating the correct time of treatment for any given current reading.
