A method for the production of a non-woven fabric comprises forming a fibrous web, at least 0.5% by weight of the fibres of which consist of fibres of polyvinyl alcohol, and the remainder being any known natural and/or synthetic textile fibres, passing the web through water or an aqueous solution, drying the fibrous fleece so formed, applying comminated polyethylene having an average molecular weight between 5000 and 70,000 in powdered or granular form in an amount between 5 and 50 grams per square yard to at least one surface of the fibrefleece and heating to effect sintering of the polyethylene. The polyethylene may be applied by sprinkling. Non-woven fabric as above may be used for stiffening garment material (e.g. collars) and may constitute an interlining disposed between two outer layers of garment material and being secured by hot pressing (dry fusion) to at least one of said outer layers.
