Abstract
937,282. Agglutinated fibrous fabrics; folding fabrics. COURTAULDS Ltd. Oct. 26, 1960 [July 27, 1959], No. 25673/59. Class 42 (2). Non-woven fabrics consisting of a number of superimposed layers of staple fibrous material bonded together are made by feeding a continuous web of fibres to a traversing mechanism which lays the web laterally in folds across a travelling conveyer and supplying a bonding agent in the form of foam to the top surface of each fold of material before the succeeding fold is laid upon it. Suitable bonding agents, which may require subsequent heating of the web for the purpose of drying or curing, or for softening the fibres, are foamed polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, epoxy resins, ester resins, and polystyrene. If applied as two components, one is supplied as a loam in accordance with the invention. Suitable fibres are cellulose acetate staple fibres in which case the bonding agent may be a plasticizer for the fibres. As shown (Fig. 1), a fibrous web 1 is formed on card 2 and carried away on conyeyer belt 3, supported on rollers 4, 5, 6 and 7, whence it falls on to conveyer belt 8, supported on rollers 9 and 10 and thence on to conveyer belt 11 supported on rollers 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. That part of belt 11 running around roller 15 coacts with a roller 18, whose axis is fixed in relation to that of roller 15, to deliver the web downwardly and transversely to a horizontal conveyer belt 19. Rollers 15 and 18 are mounted in a carriage, indicated by the dotted rectangle 20, arranged to oscillate to and fro across the width of the belt 19 and so lay the web on the latter in a series of folds, as at 21. Roller 4 of conveyer belt 3 and roller 12 of conveyer belt 11 are bn fixed axes while rollers 9 and 10 of belt 8 and rollers 13, 14, 16 and 17 of belt 11 are carried by a carriage, represented by dotted outline 22, arranged to oscillate to and fro across the width of belt 19 in phase with carriage 20 but at half the amplitude. Carriage 20 is provided with slotted or perforated pipes 27 and 28 arranged to deliver a sheet or spray of foamed bonding agent on to the layers of the web of staple fibres as they are laid on belt 19. Conveyer 19 carries the fabric through a stove (not shown) where it is heated to evaporate water from the bonding agent and effect bonding of the fibres.
