Abstract
846,235. Road-vehicle spring-suspensions. OPEL A.G., A. Jan. 28, 1959 [March 18, 1958], No. 3042/59. Class 108(2). A half axle 17 is connected to the vehicle frame 12 at a pivotal axis Y, Y, on one side of the vehicle centre line M, M, and the other half axle 27 is connected to the axle 17 (at 22) on the other side of the line M, M. As shown in Fig. 2, the frame 12 is a sub-frame which is resiliently connected to the main vehicle frame (Fig. 1, not shown). A single universal joint 32 for the drive shafts is in line with the axis X, X, of the connection 22. The effect of the moment of inertia of the differential unit 32 is compensated by making the distance x between the axes X, X, and M, M, less than the distance y between the axes Y, Y, and M, M. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the forked connections at X, X, are replaced by a single connection 52 to the vehicle frame having a certain degree of universal movement due to the presence of rubber elements 54. Rocking of the axle 17 about a vertical axis is prevented by a link 62 jointed on the axis X, X, near to the centre line M, M. The axle 27 is connected by a ball joint 58 to the axle 17 and is also provided with a link 62.
