Abstract
1,035,668. Vehicle suspension. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. April 6, 1964 [April 20, 1963; April 26, 1963], Nos. 15659/63 and 16452/63. Heading B7D. A road vehicle suspension comprises a fixed length drive shaft 1 connected to the wheel hub and differential unit 15 by universal joints 9 and 11, the wheel hub being mounted in a carrier 19 which has a pivotal connection 18, 20, 22 on a vertical axis B with a generally horizontal support member 3 which is pivoted to the vehicle by rubber bushed horizontal pivots 25 and 23 on a horizontal axis inclined to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle at such an inclination that it does not intersect the pivotal connection between the shaft 1 and the sprung mass, i.e. the universal joint 11. A coiled spring and vibration damper unit 5 is interposed between the member 3 and the vehicle. The fixed length drive shaft 1 may alternatively be non-driven with connections to the wheel hub and vehicle allowing movement about vertical and horizontal axes. The road wheel may be steerable with the axis B passing through the centre of the pivot joint 9.
