750,862. Hydraulic turbines. ETABLISSEMENTS NEYRPIC. April 13, 1954 [April 17, 1953; Nov. 10, 1953; Jan. 15, 1954; Feb. 16, 1954], No. 10889/54. Class 110(3) The rotor of a Francis turbine has a hollow nose 17, 18 extending beyond the plane of outlet 12 from the rotor and having openings 23 in its lateral wall adjacent the trailing edges of the blades 10 at their roots and an open end 16. Circulation of water is produced through the nose from the inlet 16 to the outlets 23 thereby reducing cavitation and instability of outflow. Equalizing apertures 24 in the rotor body 8 connect the space 14 with the interior of the nose. The open end 16 of the nose may be replaced by a closed end with a number of small openings and the nose may be provided internally with screw surfaces to assist pumping action. The invention is also described in connection with a Kaplan turbine.
