Abstract
986,797. Turbines and pumps. H. HAEKAL. April 10, 1961 [April 9, 1960], No. 12913/61. Headings F1C and F1T. In a turbine or pump comprising blades mounted on a rotor, such as a Kaplan turbine, the rotor blades are formed with passages which communicate with a duct in the rotor shaft, means being provided to supply a fluid medium to the passages to discharge into the space between the blade tips and the surrounding casing so as to reduce leakage of working fluid at the blade tips, a regulating means being provided in the fluid medium supply. In the Kaplan turbine shown the blades 1 are formed with ducts 5 to which fluid such as air under pressure is supplied through the duct 4 in the rotor shaft, the supply being controlled by a valve 10. The fluid discharges from the ducts 5 through passages 6 at the blade tips. Fluid may also be discharged from the blades into the spaces between the radially inner ends of the blades and the rotor hub. The fluid may alternatively be a mixture of air and water. The air need not be under pressure if it is to be supplied to the low pressure side of the blades.
