Abstract
In the refining of steel in open hearth furnaces by directing a stream of oxygen on to the molten charge, as disclosed for instance in Specification 758,529, the nozzle of the water-cooled oxygen gun used to inject the oxygen on to the bath is directed at an angle to the vertical and is disposed parallel to the vertical plane through the longitudinal axis of the furnace. By this means the pressure of the oxygen and therefore the delivery rate may be considerably increased without damage to the furnace structure by splashing. With the nozzle bent at 25 degrees to the vertical and disposed 5 inches above the bath, slag thrown up from the bath clears the nozzle. With a 225 ton furnace, and starting with a carbon content of 0.35 per cent, use of the above technique enables an average decarbonization rate of 0.42 per cent C per hour to be attained, as against 0.14 per cent C per hour with no oxygen, and 0.35 per cent C per hour delivering the oxygen vertically on to the bath.
