Class 87(ii) [Also in Group VIII] Apparatus for cutting off lengths from a moving continuous strip 1 of fibrous cement issuing from a forming machine comprises a frame 5 carrying a knife 41 and a support 42 for the strip mechanism for moving the knife towards and away :from the support across the path of the strip, driving means for oscillating or reciprocating the frame so that the knife and support are moved with the strip and at substantially the same speed as the strip at least while the knife is traversing the path of the strip, a clutch 61, 62, Fig. 2, in the driving means for the frame so that the drive is only operative when the clutch is engaged, and a device, e.g. a cam 68, which is driven from the driving means for periodically engaging the clutch. The frame is oscillated about an axis 6 by means of a cam 45 mounted on a shaft 46 which is driven from the countershaft 63 of the forming machine. The cam 68 is mounted on a shaft 66 which is driven from the countershaft 63 by means of gears 64, 65, the ratio of which can be changed to vary the length cut off from the strip. The knife is moved towards and away from the support by fluid pressure means comprising a cylinder 10, the piston 16 of which is connected to a plate 38, carrying the knife, by means of a series of toggle links, the supply of fluid to the cylinder being controlled by a valve in a housing 13, the valve having connected thereto a roller 58 which is contacted by a fixed member 57. The knife may be disposed below the strip and the support above it. The support may be movable towards and away from the strip, and the support may take the form of a second knife. The cutting edge or edges may be inclined to the strip. The mechanism may be arranged so that there is a sideways movement of the knive or knives during the cutting stroke to provide a slicing or drawing action.
