Abstract

566,522. Cutting-machines for paper &c. SMITH & SON, Ltd., W. H., and FLAWN, P. A. May 27, 1943, No. 8520. [Class 31 (i)] A guillotine machine for cutting paper, leather, &c. is constructed with a fixed shear plate 31 and a reciprocating knife 30 mounted under spring pressure in a carrier 33 which is actuated by reciprocating rods 38 connected to levers 34 to which the ends of the carrier 33 are connected. The rods 38 are actuated by separate cams or eccentrics 36 on a shaft 37 driven by belt gearing from a motor 15, which also drives means for advancing a web 10 of material intermittently. The knife 30 is given a bodily movement to and from the plate 31, together with a rocking movement about virtual axes at opposite ends of the knife alternately. The web is advanced over plate 31 with the knife 30 in the position shown in Fig. 3a, and then the knife pivots about the left-hand pivot and then commences a descending movement to effect the cut by moving through the position shown in Fig. 3b to a lower position in which the cut is completed. The knife moves about the right-hand pivot before completing the cut. On the upward stroke the movements are reversed and the knife finally reaches the position of Fig. 3a. The web is advanced by a pin-wheel feed operated by a rack 16 and a free-wheel ratchet drive, the rack being reciprocated by adjustable crank mechanism. The knife 30 is pressed by springs 40 against the plate 31 during the cutting operation, the plate being cut back at 41 to enable the leading end of the knife to clear the shear-plate. The pinwheel feed may be replaced by a friction-roller feed, and the intermittent operating means may be a Geneva stop-motion.
