Abstract

675,379. Magnetic couplings. NEILL & CO. (SHEFFIELD), Ltd., J. Jan. 15, 1951 [Jan. 13, 1950], No. 862/50. Class 35. A magnetic coupling has at least the driving or driven member arranged to carry one or more permanent magnets embedded at the periphery of a mild steel core but separated from the latter by radial slots in which non-magnetic material is inserted. Figs. 1, 2 show the two member cores 2, 6 carrying permanent magnets 4, 8, respectively separated from their cores by radial slots 3, 5 in which non-magnetic material is inserted. Figs. 4, 5 show an arrangement for oscillatory motion wherein each of the coupling members comprises a quadrant plate 11 of mild steel carrying permanent magnets 13 keyed by white metal or aluminium between projections 12. In another modification, the coupling members are arranged for reciprocating motion. Figs. 8, 9 show an eddy-current coupler wherein one member comprises a circular mild steel plate 21 carrying a copper sheet 22 in which eddy currents are induced when the other member rotates. The latter comprises a mild steel plate 18 on the driving-shaft having polepieces 19 placed between permanent magnets 20 and keyed as described above. In another arrangement, the eddy currents are induced in a tubular member which can rotate between two sets of permanent magnets carried by two concentric cores forming the driving-member of the coupling. In a further modification, a coupling combines a slip and synchronous characteristics.
