Abstract
Natural or synthetic rubber is bonded to wire by applying a thin layer of brass on a wire, drawing the brass-plated wire to reduce its size, embedding the plated wire in a rubber composition and bonding the rubber composition to the plated wire by vulcanization of the rubber. Preferably a high carbon steel wire of 0.028 inch diameter is electroplated with a layer of brass (62 per cent copper, 38 per cent zinc) and the plated wire passed through 13 dies so that the wire is reduced to 0.059 inch diameter. From graphs, Fig. 4 (not shown), it is shown that the maximum bonding strength is obtained when the copper content of the brass is between 55 and 75 per cent. Specification 515,734 is referred to.
