[Class 44] In a door latch, e.g. for a motor vehicle, a wedgeshaped projection on the door or door frame cooperates with a socket member carried on the door frame or door, a spring controlled bolt extending through an aperture in the wedge or in the wall of the socket and engaging in a notch in the other member to retain the door in a closed position. The outside handle moves about a pivot not passing transversely through the door.- Fig. 1 shows the latch mechanism and Fig. 6 is an end view of the door 1 and section of the socket member 6. A sliding bolt 10 is vertically mounted in a slot in the wedge 5 and pivotally connected to a lever 11, a spring 35 urging the bolt to the shot position. The outside handle 24 is mounted on a vertical axis and has a limb 23 engaging behind a slider 19 adapted to be displaced thereby against a spring 22. A tooth 18 on the slider engages a notch 17 in a lever 16 pivotally and slidably mounted on a pin 26 and maintained by a spring 28 in engagement with the slider 19. A depending arm 15 of the lever 16 engages an arm 14 of the lever 11 and is arranged to withdraw the bolt when the outside handle is pulled. The bolt may also be withdrawn by an inside handle acting through a slider 30, an arm of which carries a hook 33 for engagement with a pin on the arm 14 of the lever 11. Movement to the left of the slider 30 therefore causes withdrawal of the bolt. If the inside handle is turned in the opposite direction to displace the slider 30 to the right, the end of the hook 33 abuts the arm 39 of a lever 36, the other arm 38 of which bears down on a pin 29 on the lever 16 and displaces it so that the tooth 18 is no longer in engagement with the notch 17. The outside handle may then move idly. The slider 30 is retained in this locked position by a spring detent 40 engaging in a notch 42.
