Abstract

619,585. Tubular heat exchangers. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO., and NEWLING, W. B. S. Dec. 13, 1946, No. 36863. [Class 64(iii)] Relates to tubular heat exchangers of the type wherein a tube bundle 8 is mounted, in an outer shell 1, between fixed and floating heads 9 and 11, and the two fluids pass around and through the tubes respectively. According to the invention the tube bundle and floating head are of such a size as to permit their removal from the shell as a whole and a sheath 24 closely surrounds the tube bundle throughout its length, to reduce the gas passageway between the tube bundle and shell. The fixed head 9 is bolted to flanges 3 on the shell and carries a partitioned header through which one fluid enters and leaves the tube bundle. The floating head includes a domed header 21. The sheath 24 has ducts 27, 28 through which the other fluid flows, a partition 13 being provided to ensure circulation of this fluid around the tubes. The ducts 27 and 28 lie just clear of corresponding ducts 6 and 7 in the shell wall so that an open, stagnant air-space surrounds the sheath and floating head and assists thermal insulation. The tubes 8 are circular and are arranged to form a substantially circular bundle but the invention is also shown applied to circular tubes arranged in a hexagonal bundle and to flattened, rectangular tubes arranged in a square formation.
