Abstract
366,849. Straight - tube heat - exchangers. SOC. DES CONDENSEURS DELAS, 103, Rue St-Lazare, Paris. June 13, 1931, No. 17250. Convention date, Feb. 28. [Class 64 (iii).] In surface c o ndensers and other h e a t exchangers having tubes 2 rigidly secured to a fixed plate 5 and a movable one 6, the plate 6 is rigidly connected with a shell 11 which carries a variable length joint, such as a bellows 12 or sliding joint 17, to allow a free expansion of the tubes, and the cross-sectional area of the joint is equal to the total cross section of the tubes 2 so that there is no axial reaction on the tubes due to differences in pressure between the inside and outside of the header. The sliding joint 17 may be provided with a spraying ring 15 fed through pipe 16 with distilled water at a higher pressure than that in the water chamber or condensation chamber. If there are an odd number of water passes as in Fig. 5, the cooling water leaves through the joint ; if there are an even number as in Fig. 3, the joint communicates with the atmosphere. Sliders are provided to carry the plate 6 and shell 11.
