Abstract

A clutch or clutch element is composed partly or wholly of a hard metal or other material and copper or a copper alloy. The hard material is a metal of the 4th, 5th or 6th group of the periodic table or a carbide, nitride, or boride thereof, e.g. titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, or, preferably, tungsten or molybdenum or their carbides. The powdered material is pressed to shape, sintered, the copper or copper alloy being then placed in contact therewith and heated in a reducing-atmosphere, such as hydrogen, to a temperature above the melting-point of copper; alternatively, the powdered material and powdered copper are mixed, pressed and sintered. The copper may amount to 10-70 per cent of the composition, depending on the hardness of ductility required. Brass, bronze, or copper containing up to 25 per cent silver, 40 per cent nickel or manganese, 10 per cent iron or cobalt, or a hardening-agent such as nickel or cobalt silicide may be substituted for the copper, and the alloys may be given an age-hardening treatment. For a lower-friction composition, up to 5 per cent graphite or a metal such as lead, thallium, indium, cadmium, or zinc may be added. The finished element, after machining, may be brazed to a steel backing-member (see Group XXIV). Specifications 541,471 and 545,522, and U.S.A. Specification 2,131,994 are referred to.
