Abstract
563,191. Turning-gear. WEST, H. E. W. Jan. 26, 1943, No. 1288. [Class 7 (v)] In starting-means comprising an auxiliary internal-combustion engine 1 which is started, run up to speed and coupled through reduction gearing and a clutch to the main engine, a dynamo 3 coupled to the engine 1 to act as a starting motor and afterwards driven as a generator, and an electromagnet 6 actuating a coupling between the main and auxiliary engines, switch means 7, 8 is operable to connect the dynamo 3 to a battery or to the electromagnet 6. The switches 7, 8 are first engaged with contacts 9, 11 to supply current to the ignition coil 2 of the auxiliary engine and to the field 4 and armature of the dynamo 3, which starts the engine 1. On moving the switches over to contacts 10, 12, current to the coil 2 is maintained and the dynamo 3 is disconnected from the battery and connected to the solenoid 6. Current from the dynamo, driven by the engine 1, actuates a clutch connecting the engine 1 to the main engine to be started. The clutch is preferably of the type operated by helical splines so as to disengage when the main engine overruns the auxiliary engine.
