Abstract
451,212. Starting prime movers. SCINTILLA, Ltd., Soleure, Switzerland. Feb. 26, 1936, No. 5745. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1935. [Class 38 (iv)] In a starting system for internal-combustion engines two or more motors are used to effect starting, the motors are prevented from becoming operative until their pinions have engaged the driving gear and means are provided whereby any or all of the motors may be used in the starting. Two starting motors E1, E2 have their circuits controlled by electromagnetic switches K1, K2 which, in the open position prepare circuits through an auxiliary field windings D1, D2 to effect slow turning of the motors in the reverse direction before starting. These circuits are completed through the contacts 85, 86 and 91, 92 of selector switches S1, S2, corresponding to each of the motors, when a hand switch M is moved into a position connecting a terminal 55 to the batteries B. Switch M is then moved over to contact 56 whereby electromagnets F1, F2 are energized through contacts 84, 86 and 90, 93 of switches S1, S2 so as to move the motor armatures axially to engage the pinions. Engagement of the pinions closes switches G1, G2 which are in series with each other in the circuits of coils J1, J2 operating the switches K1, K2. Thus, when all the motor pinions are engaged switches K1, K2 connect the starting motors through main field windings C1, C2 to the supply in the correct direction. Auxiliary contacts N1, N2 effect connection of the windings D1, D2 in shunt with their respective armatures to assist the main windings. If one of the motors is to be rendered inoperative the corresponding switch S1 or S2 is operated to open the initial circuits for the windings D1, D2 and the electromagnets F1, F2 and at the same to close a circuit shunting the corresponding armature operated switch G1 or G2 at contacts 83, 88 or 89, 94. so as to permit starting even with one of these switches open. An overrunning clutch may be interposed between the rotor of each motor and its pinion shaft. Specification 399,278 is referred to.
