Abstract
541,489. Supply circuits for discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 27, 1940, No. 9304. Convention date, May 27, 1939. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] Starting, and pre-heating the electrodes of a gaseous discharge device is effected by supplying the device e.g. a lamp through a step-up auto transformer 8, the full (secondary) winding of which is connected to one electrode 2 of the lamp and a portion of the winding (the primary) is connected in a branch resonant circuit containing a reactional 10 and a capacitance 11 to the other electrode 3; the branch circuit supplies the heating current for both the filaments. As shown, the branch circuit includes the filament 3 and it supplies the filament 2 from a secondary 12 on the reactional 10 which is in the form of a transformer with air gaps 13 and a saturable magnetic shunt 15. When the lamp strikes the filament heating supply is reduced owing to the reduced flux through the secondary because of the magnetic shunt. In a modification the reactance 10 serving as a ballast is a plain reactor and the branch circuit is taken through the primary of an auxiliary transformer the secondary of which supplies the filament 2. In a further modification a secondary on the reactor 10 is connected to the filament 2 and to a tapping on the auto-transformer so that the voltage applied to it is the vector sum of the two sources which is much reduced when the discharge starts owing to the considerable phase-angle between them.
