Abstract
499,280. Converting. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 16, 1938, No. 17943. Convention date, June 16, 1937. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] In a converting arrangement which comprises a discharge device 4 provided with a highresistance starting electrode 8, permanently immersed in the cathode 7, the starting voltage to the electrode 8 is supplied from a condenser 15 and an inductive reactance 16 in dependence upon the degree of magnetization of the reactance which is determined by the intensity of ionization in the device. D.C. is supplied through valves 4, 5 to the mains 2 from the A.C. source 1. Each valve has exciting anodes 9 which are connected to a transformer 19, supplied from the source 1 through a phase shifter 14 and a transformer 13. The centrepoint on the transformer secondary 21 is connected through a, winding 18 on the reactance 16 to the cathode 7, so that rectified current flows therethrough ; the degree of magnetization of the reactance will therefore depend upon the current in winding 18. The winding 17 and the condenser 15 form a tuned circuit so that when the maintaining arcs to the anodes 9 are extinguished, the reactance becomes unsaturated and voltage impulses are supplied through the rectifier 22 to the electrode 8.
