Abstract
523,939. Artificial silk &c. COURTAULDS, Ltd., WORMELL, R. L., and KNIGHT, C. L. Jan. 18, 1939, No. 1809. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial filaments are obtained by extruding an alkaline solution of a protein such as casein into a solution which has a pH value not greater than 2 and which contains an addition of a soluble monocarboxylic aliphatic acid, e.g. formic, acetic, or lactic acid. The coagulating bath may contain sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, and acetic acid. After leaving the coagulating bath, the thread may be washed and subjected to hardening and other treatments. It may be passed through a liquid containing formaldehyde, sodium sulphate, and aluminium sulphate, and it may be subjected to a stretching operation. Specification 502,710 is referred to.
