Abstract

A process for the insolubilisation of artificial filamentary products obtained by spinning aqueous alkaline solutions of vegetable globulins or phospho-proteins into suitable acidified saline coagulating baths, comprises treatment first in a bath of aqueous formaldehyde, saturated with both sodium chloride and sodium sulphate or with both sodium chloride and magnesium sulphate at a pH of 4 to 6 and at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C., and second, in a bath of aqueous formaldehyde strongly acidified with sulphuric acid and saturated with either sodium sulphate or magnesium sulphate at a raised temperature. Preferentially, if the first formaldehyde bath is saturated to both sodium chloride and sodium sulphate the second strongly acidified bath is saturated to sodium sulphate while if the first is saturated to both sodium chloride and magnesium sulphate the second is saturated to magnesium sulphate. The filaments may be prepared from solutions of pea-nut proteins or of casein. The time of treatment in the bath at pH 4 to 6 is dependent upon the temperature; at 50 DEG C. about five minutes is sufficient whereas at 40 DEG C. 8-15 minutes will be necessary. This bath must be saturated in order to employ the second strongly acid bath at a temperature sufficiently high to effect rapid insolubilisation. The second bath should not be at a temperature higher than 75 DEG C. The time of treatment at 70 DEG C. is 10 to 15 minutes. The concentration of sulphuric acid is at least 175 g. per litre. The concentration of formaldehyde in both baths is of the order of 1 1/2 per cent. In an example stable fibre produced from unhardened protein artificial filaments made by spinning an aged solution of pea-nut protein in dilute sodium hydroxide into strong sodium sulphate acidified with sulphuric acid at 30 DEG C. is immersed in a warm solution containing 1 1/2 per cent formaldehyde by weight and saturated to sodium chloride and sodium sulphate and brought to pH 5.0, the temperature of the bath being 50 DEG C. After 5 minutes the fibre was removed and allowed to drain somewhat. It was then transferred to a second bath at 70 DEG C., a bath saturated to sodium sulphate at that temperature and containing 1 1/2 per cent formaldehyde by weight and a sulphuric acid content of 240 g. per litre. After 10 minutes treatment it was removed and washed and it was found to be unimpaired by boiling with water or by acid wool dye baths. Finishing treatments were then given. Specification 513,910 is referred to.
