Abstract

541,099. Artificial silk &c. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and WHARTON, J. May 11, 1940, Nos. 8522 and 10531. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial filaments, yarns, threads, and the like are obtained by extruding viscose into an aqueous coagulating solution of sulphuric acid and at least one metallic salt in the presence of a non-ionogenic water-soluble compound, obtainable by the action of an alkylene oxide on a monohydroxy compound containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the chain. The non-ionogenic compound may be added to the spinning solution or to the co-agulating bath. It may be a condensation product of ethylene oxide with an aliphatic acid or alcohol, e.g. oleyl, lauryl, or cetyl alcohol. The monohydroxy compound may be saturated or unsaturated and it may have a straight chain or a branched or closed chain. It may be an alcohol, phenol, or carboxylic acid. The presence of the alkylene oxide condensation product during the formation of the filaments reduces the tendency of the spinning orifices to become clogged. In an example, viscose is extruded into a co-agulating bath. comprising dilute sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, glucose, zinc sulphate, and a watersoluble condensation product of ethylene oxide and lauric acid. Specification 380,431 is referred to. One of the Provisional Specifications refers also to the use of other compounds containing hydrophobic groups and in particular to a water-soluble condensation product from pentaglycerol and lauric acid.
