Abstract

1523550 Electro-chemical gas sensor WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 2 Dec 1976 [5 Dec 1975] 50256/76 Heading G1N A sensor for determining a component of a gas mixture comprises a cell 20 (two electrodes 22, 26 and electrolyte 24) which with an applied voltage, can pump the gas and a gas diffusion means 30 having an aperture 32, the outside G of which contacts the gas mixture. The pump is operated to remove the gas component from the volume 34 between aperture 32 and the sensor 20 and the cell current is a measure of the gas component diffusing through the aperture and hence the gas component concentration. The sensor preferably measures oxygen, the electrolyte being an oxygen ion conducting solid electrolyte, but any cell capable of the required pumping may be used.
