Abstract
1408746 Lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 April 1974 [28 April 1973] 18164/74 Heading F4R [Also in Division H1] A sealed beam unit comprises an outer envelope in the form of a concave reflector part 2 sealed to a front glass (3) and an inner filament lamp 8, preferably of the quartz iodine type, mounted within the outer envelope, the lamp 8 having a pinch seal 13 which is surrounded and held by a sleeve-shaped cap 14 made of metal strip material and secured to a cranked supporting wire 23 sealed in a ferrule 5 in the reflector part 2. The wire 23 serves as the sole support for the lamp 8. In the preferred embodiment the lamp 8 contains dipped- and main-beam filaments 9, 10 and a dipping shield 11 and the cap 14 carries a holding wire 19 for a metal shield 20. During the assembly of the unit the free end of the wire 23 is gripped by fixed tongs 25 and held in alignment with the ferrule 5 in the reflector part 2. The end of the wire which is secured to the cap 14 is gripped by movable tongs 24 and an electric voltage U is applied between the tongs to heat the wire so that it becomes deformable. The lamp 8 is then moved to the desired position relative to the reflector part 2 and when the wire has cooled the part 2 is moved into position 2a so that the wire 23 projects through the ferrule 5 and the current conductors 22 project through ferrules 6, in which they are then secured by brazing. The wire 23 acts as one current conductor.
