Abstract
In making an electric lamp, means for holding one end of a lead-in wire, which may be drawn from a reel, is inserted into an envelope having openings at opposite ends, the wire is cut and shaped and a filament mounted between the cut ends, the envelope and holding means are moved so that the filament is located within the envelope and the ends of the latter are sealed with the lead-in wires passing through the seals. One end is first sealed while the interior of the envelope is flushed with inert gas through the other end, which is then sealed. During the second sealing, further flushing is carried out using inert gas of the composition desired for the final filling. The sealing is effected by heating the glass of the ends of the envelope and compressing it between jaws shaped to produce a flattened press having V-shaped grooves on one or both sides into which the ends of the lead-in wires are finally flattened to form contact terminals for the lamp. Instead of using lead-in wire cut from a reel, a pair of wires cut to equal length are supported side-by-side, one in a holder extending through the envelope, and the filament is mounted between them. The holder outside the envelope is then swung upwards through 180 degrees and the envelope moved up to enclose the filament. The holder may be constructed with one or more openings through which the flushing gas can be directed into the envelope.
