Abstract

1402710 Knitting COURTAULDS LTD 21 Nov 1972 [22 Nov 1971] 54098/71 Headings D1C and D1K A sleeved garment blank is formed by knitting a split body portion, on at least one bed of a two bed machine up to lines joining the sleeves, rearranging loops on the two beds so that they are in the same relative positions as they will occupy in the finished blank; and knitting onto these loops shoulders and tubular sleeves. The blank may be knit on flat or circular machines, and is without edge portions curled back on one bed to lie alongisde the main portion on the other bed. The preferred embodiments are knit on a conventional V-bed machine with mechanism for stitch transfer between and along the beds; or a machine having a two part second bed and mechanism for stitch transfer between beds. In the latter embodiment the V-bed machine includes a fixed bed 61, and second bed 62, 63 of two parts. The parts are movable towards or away from one another by lead screw 72. Body fabric 20 is knit up to the armpits 23, 24 and continues with two fashioned front panels 25, 26 and one rear panel 31, or vice versa. Loops along shoulder lines 27, 28, 32, 33 are retained on inactive needles. If rib or fancy stitch effects are included in the body all loops are transferred to bed 61. Loops of the last course are pressed off. End loops 97, 98 Fig 8a are transferred from needles 64c, d to the innermost needles 64a, b of the two part bed 62, 63. The beds are moved towards each other, Fig 8b. Loop transfer and bed movement continue until the shoulder loops either side of armpits 23, 24 are symmetrically disposed on the two beds, Fig 8c. U-shaped shoulder courses are knit onto the held loops, which are progressively activated, Figs 8d, e; and are followed by tubular sleeve courses, Fig 8f. If the blank is knit on a fixed bed machine, loop transfers between beds is followed by transfer of the group of loops along the bed. The blank may be finished by shaping the neck, 50, 51. The body portion may be knit wide enough so that edge wales 35, 36 overlap; alternatively the edges may be seamed.
