Abstract

1467337 Knitting SHIMA IDEA CENTER CO Ltd 11 June 1974 [11 June 1973] 25760/74 Heading D1K Gloves are knitted on a V-bed machine by a method comprising the following steps in sequence: the four fingers and adjoining portions of the back and palm of the glove 4, 4a respectively are knitted on both beds as far as the base of the thumb portion on the finished glove, the stitches of the palm portion 4a in the region of the thumb are transferred from needles 3 to the shanks of needles 1, the needles 3 and the opposite needles 1 then knit the thumb portion 6, 6a while the other needles 1 and needles 2 remain inoperative, the needles 1 used to knit the thumb portion then knit a plurality of linking courses e.g. of thermoplastic or bulky yarn to unite the edges of the palm and thumb portions 4a, 6 the latter courses are removed from the needles and all the needles knit the remainder of the palm and back portions towards the wrist end of the glove. The thermoplastic yarn of the linking courses is heated during or after knitting to prevent fraying and the linking courses may also be joined by overlock stitches, subsequently coated with adhesive, to the palm and thumb portions. Instead of the stitch transfer needles 3 being located at the end of a needle bed, as shown, they may have needles on both sides and may be positioned so as to produce either a thumb portion projecting laterally beyond the body of the glove or a thumb portion spaced inwardly from the edge of the glove.
