Abstract

1447030 Needled fibre fabrics HYFIL Ltd and COTTON SILK & MAN-MADE FIBRES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 18 July 1973 [21 July 1972] 12416/76 Divided out of 1447029 Heading D1R Onto a unidirectional warp array 10 of continuous carbonisable filaments in an oxidised state are cross laid other of said filaments on one side of the array in a state of restraint from displacement from their cross-laid relationship, and the resultant assembly is needle punched from the resultant assembly the same side. The fabric produced may be carbonised. In one embodiment the state of restraint is produced by previously passing the warp array 10 through needling machine 14 and winding it up on roll 30, the needling being from the second side of the warp so as to push loops and broken ends of filaments out from said one side, the upper side in Fig. 2, to key weft array 34 which is cut and cross laid whilst warp 10 is stationary. An additional warp and an additional weft array may be needled onto the fabric (Fig. 3, not shown). The two weft arrays may be at 45‹ to the warp and at 90‹ to each other. The exemplified array is a 24 inch wide sheet of 25,000 continuous 1.5 denier polyacrylonitrile filaments per inch, the filament array having been divided into groups to enable at least one weft filament to be woven over and under said groups to hold the sheet together. The weft filaments may alternatively or additionally be restrained by resilient pads 38 on stripper plate 22 of the needling machine. The weft filaments are 2 inches longer than the width of the warp array so that pads 38 exert pressure on the fringes of weft array 34. Stripper plate 22 pivots to allow the fabric to pass freely through the needling machine during the advance stage of the cycle. After carbonising the fabric may be "pre sized" with a resin solution, dried and impregnated with a matrix solution, as claimed in Specification 1447029.
