Abstract

1384073 Sewing machine SAMCO-STRONG Ltd 17 Jan 1972 [18 Jan 1971] 2069/72 Heading D1G Workpieces W of limp material are guided through the sewing point of a sewing machine by a work engaging member 70, 72 movable towards and away from the work table 20 by means 98 and rotatable by means 82 to swing the work W against an edge guide 24, the machine also including a spreader plate 30 which co-operates with the work table to maintain the workpiece flat as it is guided and fed, and sensing means 56-66 detecting the presence of the workpiece edge to control the work engaging member 70, 72. The worktable 20 is supported on a frame 26 which also supports the brackets 80, 81 mounting the pneumatic cylinders 82 98, operating the member 70, 72, and the cylinders 50 and 104 which respectively urge the plate 30 towards the work table and operate a thread cutter 102. The plate 30 is of transparent plastics and is mounted on leaf springs (34, 36 Fig. 2 not shown) to be movable between stops (42, 46) and is pressed down by cylinder device 50 to permit a single thickness of the workpiece to pass thereunder, but when raised permits a turned and sewn hem thereof to pass thereunder. Operation. As the workpiece is fed by dog 13 past a trimming knife 17 and its waste extraction vacuum duct 18 to an edge folder 16 and needle station 2 the pneumatic sensors 56-68 detect the approach of a corner and actuate valves in a control circuit (Fig. 6 not shown) to lower arm 70 to engage the work and then swing it, by mechanism 82-85 to turn the work at the corner moving the next edge of the work against guide 24. An air blast at nozzle 110 retards the work as the edge approaches the guide. Member 70 is then raised and swung back into its original position. The circuit includes counting means which, when the last corner is being turned ensures that member 70 does not rise as it is swung back, the hem being therefore oversewn.
